Wedding timeline tips!
We’re really excited to capture your wedding and deliver a beautiful wedding film to you!
First and foremost we want you to have exactly the wedding day you want! We know that if you’ve hired Mist + Moss, chances are the film is important to you. So we’ve compiled a few tips to consider when putting your timeline together…
The Morning
During prep in the morning is often when we film some of our favorite moments between you and your friends and family. Many a happy tear has been captured during this time! It’s also the part of the day that can create the most stress for you. Here are some quick tips for morning prep time:
Pad the timeline more than you think. More often than not, hair and makeup running late is the leading cause of delayed timelines. A first look is a great way to make sure you have enough padding at the end of this time.
Want us to record your card exchange? Often in our films we have audio of the couple reading cards to one another. If this is something you’re interested in, write in on the schedule and expect it to take about ten minutes. Side note, we really love to have the audio be of the person who WROTE the card so ask us about how to make that happen.
Have a first look. We totally get that there is something magical about that look down the aisle being the first time you see each other. We actually agree! However, we think a first look can be pretty magical as well, and also help your wedding day go much smoother. Of course, do what will be most special for you, but also feel free to ask us more about why we advocate for a first look.
The Ceremony
Have an unplugged ceremony. This is harder than you think. Putting up a sign at the back will do very little to prevent a cell phone from sticking out and blocking our view of you walking down the aisle. We recommend having the officiant make an explicit announcement before the ceremony begins.
Portrait time
Plan in video time if that’s important to you. How much time you dedicate for just the two of you is completely up to you, but our suggestion is to add 10 minutes to portraits on top of what the photographer is recommending so that we both have time to get the shots we need.
Prioritize what matters to you! The reality is, there is only so much time in one wedding day. As much as it would be nice to do every possible combination of family photo, and every single fun bridal party picture you have in mind, if you want also enjoy hanging out at cocktail hour you are going to have to have priorities. Especially if you still want time and energy for photo’s of the two of you.
Have a sunset session. In terms of the quality of the image, light is everything. For a live event, we are limited to natural light and we’re always thinking about how to best use what’s available to us. At sunset, the light is the absolute best, so that’s when we are going to get our best looking images!
At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you get to enjoy the day the way you want. If that’s spending most of your time taking formal family pictures then do it! If that’s having a lot of time doing portraits, great! If that’s not having very much formal photo and video time at all, that’s amazing too! Just make sure that you get to spend the day the way that YOU want to. Let us know what that looks like for you, and we’ll help you make that happen!
Bonus Tip: You can pack cute and comfortable shoes to change into for portraits! We focus as much on movement as we can so the more comfortable you are moving, the easier it will be to get some of those fun shots. Similarly, if you’re wearing a cathedral length veil, plan on doing some portraits without it. Long veils get caught on everything and make moving around hard to do.
